Architecture versus landscape: both are celebrated in the NZIA Southern Architecture Awards

You can’t quite beat the scenery in the southern south, but this year’s architecture winners are getting closer.

Projects celebrated in the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Southern Architecture Awards include houses featuring new forms of the local vernacular – gabled roofs, exposed timbers and bagged shale.

But they also include a sharp architecture influenced by fractured summits and the desire for a more contemporary architectural expression.

Southern judging chair Barry Condon of Condon Scott Architects said the judges had an incredible selection of quality projects of exceptional caliber.

“There was a very fine line separating the winners, with a high level of technical complexity and careful attention to detail in projects across all categories. From innovative small-project architecture to rich, community-focused commercial projects , it was very clear that the southern region consistently produces bold and innovative designs that we could easily see nationally.”

Housing award winners include Speargrass House designed by Sumich Chaplin Architects. The prize jury declared that this house for a young family offers pleasure in its variations and deviations from a familiar typology.

“The gabled form of the main living space is carefully articulated with unexpected openings to respond to views and daylight.

“The house has a charming winding quality as it wraps around a courtyard garden. Rich in texture and in perfect scale, the architecture creates a welcoming shelter in a grand landscape.

Terrace Edge overlooking Lake Hayes, designed by Anna-Marie Chin Architects, is another home that puts a contemporary spin on the Alpine vernacular of the gable form.

“The plan creates separate spaces for a family of three adults, connected by hallways that display a creative appreciation of materiality and design,” the jury said. “While the alpine landscape plays a clear role in the choice of materials, the delivery is pleasantly unexpected, with a mix of schist, metal, glazing and wood creating a refined textural experience inside and out. .”

The Coast House in Omaui, Southland, winner of Stacey Farrell Architect’s Small Project Award, is described as a ‘true nativity scene’ that is an exercise in creativity and integrity.

“Designed to be unassuming, the entryway is flanked by two corner storage spaces, leading to a home dedicated to good times and outdoor enjoyment.

“We make sure to minimize the impact on the environment with a small footprint and impressive thermal performance. In addition to a naturally rich color palette, creative and economical materials, such as exposed SIPS panels and metal frame highlights, contribute to the warm atmosphere of this escape block.

Other notable winners are the new Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital by Warren & Mahoney Architects in Lake Hayes and the new Holiday Inn Express & Suites Queenstown by McAuiffe Stevens.
