Construction News editor to hand over in June

Building News editor Lem Bingley is due to step down in June, handing over the role to new editor Colin Marrs.

Marrs joins NC from public finance, a digital and print publication for public finance professionals. A journalist since 1997, Marrs has worked as a writer and editor for built environment publications covering architecture, housing, real estate, planning and urban regeneration.

Earlier this week, NC welcomed another newcomer, Luke Haynes, who joined on Monday as editor of publisher Haymarket.

Bingley’s departure will see him move to real estate weekanother title on the built environment produced by NC Emap editor.

Bingley joined NC in July 2019, and its tenure encompassed the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the publication’s 150th anniversary in 2021, as well as its transition from a weekly publication to a monthly publication in print.

He commented: “My priority over the past three years has been to ensure Building News provides information that is as useful and relevant as possible for managers working across the sector. The industry faces many challenges – technical, financial and cultural – and I hope NC helped readers find solutions or pointed them in the right direction.

Bingley’s tenure saw NC launch the Decarbonizing construction conference series, which will take place for the third time on June 14 and 15. He has also led work on Engagement of inspiring women, an initiative to promote gender equality across the sector. So far, the Pledge has been adopted by 45 employers, including major leading contractors and leading industry consultants and specialists. Earlier this year, CN’s The Inspiring Women program has been expanded through a new partnership with sister publication New Civil Engineer.

Bingley said: “I look forward to the challenge of editing real estate week, but I’m also sorry to leave the build. Three years have gone by quickly, but not as quickly as the turnover of construction ministers – five of whom have been in office since I was appointed editor in 2019.”

Marrs will join NC starting May 30, and Bingley will drive real estate week from June 8.
