Construction underway at the Sovereign Square Hotel | Yorkshire Property News

Work has started on a new hotel which is the final phase of the Sovereign Square development in Leeds.

GMI Construction Group is the main construction contractor for the 12-story, 305-room hotel, having been appointed by the Marrico LLP and Helios Development JV partnership.

Around 190 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, with the 140,000 square foot hotel creating more than 80 full-time jobs when completed in 2024.

Interstate Group will operate the hotel under the two Hyatt brands Hyatt House and Hyatt Place, offering short and long-stay accommodations to business and leisure travelers.

It will include meeting rooms, an on-site gym, a restaurant and bar on the ground floor extending outside into the public square, as well as a freestanding rooftop bar with a dedicated entrance .

The development, funded by Abrdn/UK Commercial Property REIT (UKCM), was designed by Leeds-based DLA Architecture, who took inspiration from the surrounding architecture and Leeds’ merchandising and textile history.

Chris Weathers, Commercial Director of GMI Construction Group, said: “Sovereign Square has become a landmark in the heart of the city, being the first new public space to be developed in Leeds for over a decade.

“This striking hotel is the final piece of the jigsaw in the development of what has become one of the city’s most desirable and desirable destinations. It will complete the extensive regeneration of the area and further enhance other adjacent developments and the public green space.”
