Portsmouth Treadgolds building celebrated for great architecture as it wins RIBA award

Royal Institute of British Architects South Award 2022 winning projects included Treadgolds in Portsmouth by Pritchard Architecture.

It was one of many buildings across the country to be honored in the prestigious awards.

The Victorian site is undergoing a £3million restoration project after it was bought by the John Pounds project in Portsea in 2013. It was once homes and hardware stores William Treadgold, which closed in 1988 , then the building owned by Hampshire County Council was used as a museum from 1995 to 2003.

The 13 projects were selected by the jury of experts, who visited the 18 shortlisted projects.

Regional jury chairman Matthew Barnett Howland said: “At first glance, there is a wide range of distinctive qualities in the 13 buildings which received a RIBA South Award this year.

“There is intense spatial ambition and pleasure; sophisticated urbanism and assertive suburbs; sobriety and economy of means; creative relationship between architect and client; elegant simplicity in plan and section.

“But beyond their own individual strengths, what unites them as a group is a sense that their outward form is the result of an underlying, hard-earned clarity of thought, from conception to completion. resolution. They are a triumph of both spirit and matter.

The RIBA Awards have been in existence since 1966 and are judged and presented locally.

RIBA Award-winning projects set the standard for great architecture across the country.

The RIBA Awards are given to buildings in the UK by RIBA Chartered Architects and RIBA International Fellows.

The RIBA South Building of the Year 2022, sponsored by Taylor Maxwell, will be announced on May 24 during a ceremony at RIBA’s headquarters in London.

Winners of the RIBA South Award will now be considered for a coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, to be announced in June.

The RIBA Special Awards are sponsored by Michelmersh, Taylor Maxwell and Gaggenau.
