Jimenez, Payton Clemens, Raven Alvarado, Ryan Call(’22) Chaimae Alehyane, Corrine Tendorf, Harmony Smith, Jacob Brown and Susana Brinez. The CoA will host a launch party on May 11, 2022 at 6:00 p.m., complete with informal discussions on the publication’s contributions and central themes on the first floor of the Architecture Building.

The theme for this issue of CROP, SHED, takes its name from the modest typology, acknowledging the vernacular, agricultural and industrial built environment that connects Texas to the spaces and places of the Midwest. Furthermore, the number interprets SHED as both a noun and a verb, interrogating a double meaning as in “to shed”, examining what we store and protect, as well as what we release and let go, articulating the tension between liberation and container, a crucial material for contemporary architectural production and critical historical reflection.

Specifically, this issue brings to an end a year of quarantine and confinement to reflect on remoteness in action, explore new learning environments, and accelerate adaptations in architectural practice. Offering perspective and context from a location often considered “remote”—perched on the dusty coast between the Midwest and the US-Mexico border—SHED aims to probe, challenge, and redirect metrocentric architectural narratives. Written at a watershed moment, the issue delves into the shed, the land, the climate, the worker, the radically rural and beyond, bringing together interviews, essays and time-sensitive design projects of local, national and international.
