University of Northampton graduate’s new business is branded ‘Construction Industry LinkedIn’

A University of Northampton (UON) graduate is building a strong business to help professionals in the construction industry.

“Collabed” is the brainchild of Alex Ramsden, who started the business just months after graduating with an architectural technology degree from UON in 2020.

It has been dubbed the “Linkedin” of the construction industry, combining a job notification board and a professional networking platform. It aims to help players in the sector find new opportunities and graduates to turn theory into practice by landing their first professional position.

Alex Ramsden graduated from UON with a degree in Architectural Technology in 2020.

Alex says he couldn’t have done it without the “instrumental” help he received from UON.

He said, “The university provided one-on-one business mentorship for my initial idea, helping me build it from the ground up. I also received two development grants totaling £7,500.

“I’m now at a point with Collabed where I’ve made a crowdfunding investment to add ‘more floors’ and make it a scalable business. In short, I couldn’t have gotten to where I am without them.

Alex has received help through the university’s Changemaker Incubator, which is a framework that connects organizations in Northamptonshire through the value for people and society generated by how they buy from their suppliers .

The incubator also provides expertise, resources and funding to voluntary, charitable and social enterprise organizations so that they have a direct link to working with university students.

UON Social Entrepreneur-in-Residence Jay Baughan said, “Alex’s superb initiative is the very definition of what we hope to achieve with the Changemaker Incubator, the first time one of our students has funded a start-up business. This is how the business world is moving here and now and Alex shows a clear direction for others to follow.

“The incubator actively builds on the existing Changemaker ethos that runs through the University of Northampton – namely, to support and develop projects by students, staff and members of our community that have a demonstrable positive impact on people, society and the environment.”
